Description: Here is an outstanding script "I" infantry button recovered from the Fort Fisher area. This one has a slick brown patina, stand up shank, and crisp backmark.

Backmark: "SUPERIOR  / (dot) QUALITY (dot) " dm, outer ring of dots, inner solid ring.

Measures: 22.69mm

Z1241     Confederate Script "I" Infantry Button

Description: Here is another excavated script "I" button This one was recovered in the vicinity of Hough's Bridge in Kershaw County. This one has a very slight push to the highest part of the face and the shank is slightly bent.

Backmark: "SUPERIOR  / (dot) QUALITY (dot) " dm, outer ring of dots, inner solid ring.

Description: Here is a perfect Infantry button with the harder to find backmark. This one doesn't have any pushes and the stand up shank is intact.

Z1239     Confederate Script "C" Cavalry Button

Description: Here is a very nice excavated script "C" cavalry button. This one has a nice pleasing patina. The only issue with this button is the shank is bent over but still intact. There are no cracks and the face is perfect!

Backmark: "S. ISAACS CAMPBELL & CO. / (dot) LONDON (dot) / 71. JERMYN. ST." dm  outer ring of dots, inner solid ring.

Z1238     Confederate Script "A" Artillery Button

Description: Here is an excellent and mint example of a Confederate Artillery button. This one has the backmark of S. Isaacs Campbell. The button has a slick chocolate patina, crisp backmark, and a perfect stand up shank. You would be hard pressed to find a nicer one!

Description: Here is a very nice eagle Infantry button with gilt surrounding the eagle. The stand up shank is intact and there are no cracks or pushes to the face.

Z1182     Federal Eagle "C" Cavalry Coat Button

Description: Here is a great eagle Cavalry button with a very slick patina. This one was recovered in Mine Run, Virginia by Robert Stonelake. This one is missing the shank but has an excellent backmark. There are no pushes or cracks throughout the body.

Description: Here is a very nice excavated Cavalry button. This one is an overcoat size and still has plenty of gilt surrounding the eagle. The shank is intact and the button doesn't have any dents or cracks.

Description: Here is a very nice excavated eagle Cavalry button. This one still has a good bit of gold left in the right places. The stand up shank is intact and there is still a bit of thread left. There are no dents, cracks, or pushes on this example.

Description: Excavated eagle  "I" coat button. The face of this one doesn't have any pushes or cracks but the back does have a small hole.

Description: Here is a very nice Rhode Island state seal button that could be cleaned up a little more. There is plenty of gilt left under the dirt. The stand up shank is intact and there are no pushes, cracks, etc.

Description: Nice excavated cavalry coat button. This one was recovered from an early war camp in Bakerton, West Virginia. The face still retains a lot of gilt but the back is pushed and cracked around the shank.

Description: Nice dug cuff button with an excellent patina. This one has the standup shank intact and is very nice. No pushes, cracks, dents, etc.

Description: Here is a very nice excavated South Carolina cuff button. This one has better detail than what the photos show. There is still some silver gilt in some places. The back and standup shank are intact. The shank is slightly bent and there are no pushes, cracks, or repairs.

Description: Here is a very nice excavated Confederate Artillery button. This one has a very nice face with no cracks or dents present. The back of this button has been professionally repaired and there is a shank present. This is fairly common for these tin back "A" buttons.

Z638     1812 Era Cast Infantry Button (Foliate Design w Star)

Description: Here is a very nice foliate design infantry button. This one has the star that is pointing downward in the oval on the base. This one was professionally reshanked many years ago with a silver shank.

Z504     Virginia Military Institute Coat Button (VMI)

Description: These buttons are slightly transitional/post war. They don't show up on period uniforms and they don't show up with other excavated buttons of the same style. This is the pattern where the spear touches the bottom of the "D" in CADET. The back and shank are slightly pushed on this example.

Description: Here is a very nice Vermont cuff button. This one still has plenty of gilt left on the face and the stand up shank is intact. This button is published in the NSTCW Magazine Vol. 34 No. 4/2009 on page. 14.
